National workshop on healthcare waste management starts

A national workshop on Integrated Healthcare Waste Management and Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in healthcare facilities has started in Kathmandu today.
A total of 350 national and 20 international participants will be taking part in the three day national workshop.
The speakers in the event will talk about policy framework for waste management and sanitation in healthcare centres. Panel discussions on climate smart healthcare topics such as global green hospital movement for climate smart healthcare, climate resilient health system, climate disasters and health action for making smart hospitals will be discussed during the event.
Also discussions will be done on the use of technologies in waste management such as use of non-burning technologies in waste management, safety practices for hospital staffers, waste reduction, reuse, refuse and recycle among similar other issues.
Organised by Ministry of Health and Population with support from various organizations working in the sector GIZ, WHO, UNDP, WaterAid, UNICEF, SNV, KfW the event is aimed to assess gaps in areas of healthcare waste. “It will help us to share information, learn from one another’s experience for management of waste materials generated from healthcare centres,” said Bhogendra Raj Dotel, Director, Management Division under the Department of Health Services.
Minister for Health and Population Bhanubhakta Dhakal inaugurating the event said, “We need to bring some changes in the policies and laws if we are to properly manage the waste materials. All the government across the country should work together to lessen the health risks of the hospital generated waste.”
